Expanding Influence
The Europeans wanted control all aspects of each and every one of their colonies:
a. They wanted to influence the political and social lives of people
b. They wanted to shape economies so that they benefit Europe
c. They wanted people to adopt the customs of Europe

Forms of Control
Methods of Management
Europeans developed four forms of control:

a. Colony: governed by a foreign power
b. Protectorate: allowed its own government but was under the control of a foreign power
c. Sphere of influence: claimed as the exclusive trading or investment realm of a foreign power
d. Economic Imperialism: controlled by private businesses rather than by a foreign government
Europeans used only two methods to manage their colonies:

1. Direct control:
i. Paternalism
ii. Assimilation

2. Indirect control:
i. Limited self rule for governments
ii. Legislative body includes local as well as colonial officials.
