A British Colony 

 

a. Britain's control of Nigeria: 

     i. Britain takes control by force and diplomacy  

     ii. All of Nigeria claimed as a colony in 1914  

     

b. Managing their colonies: 

      i. Nigeria is very culturally diverse

          1. 250 ethnic groups

      ii. British utilize indirect rule with Hausa-  Fulani People 

          1. Local chiefs resent limits on their rule  

          2. Yoruba and Igbo chiefs resent limits on their power  



 

 

Gaining Control 

b. The imperialis powers had two main methods of running their colonies:

      i. Britain conquers southern nigeria utilizing force and diplomacy 

      ii. Conquest of northern Nigeria through royal Niger Company    

     iii. In 1914, britain claims that all of Nigeria as a colony 

      iv. Britain and the United States used indirect control

          1. Because area was great and peopled by different groups
