Changes to Plan/My Clock/Testing Against Specifications

Changes to plan:

I made a lot of changes to my plan of action. My create stage went a little different than planned.

The reason is that as a class we missed several days due to the basketball match and due to in

class tests. Other than that, making some things took a longer time than I had assumed. In addition

to that, I changed my design a little bit. For example, I didn’t add many colors of fabric to the

pendulum, and it was just one color, and instead of a mirror I added small plastic mosaic pieces on

my clock. Though I did not really have a lot of problems…

My Clock:

My clock looks pretty good. It fits the purpose of telling the time and it fits most o the specifications

and I built it according to my design. In my opinion, the clock is very aesthetically pleasing and it has

a pendulum like I had wanted. In addition to that, it works pretty well too and it looks exactly like I

wanted it to. Other than that, the clock looks very realistic in shape and I spent pretty time on it.

Testing Against Specifications:

1. Size: The clock is smaller than 500mm by 500mm. It is about 30cm by 39cm, and it was

cut using a professional cutter and its edges were filed and sanded off. And it looks

pretty beautiful like the specification states. (2)

2. Color: The clock is one specific color. It is the color blue which was one of the preferred

the colors. The specification said that it needs to be painted in color and that it can be

black and white or colorful and I picked colorful. (2)

3. Shape: Should either be a circle or a specific object’s shape. We have in mind, a circle

which is black and white, like a maze, if you pick that then that’s how it has to be, if you

would like you can also pick a specific object’s shape, such as a puzzle piece, and make it

look like that. (2)

4. Material: It is made out of wood like the specification had stated.  The specification said

that it would be put in the living room and it should be made so that it matches the

wood and the design of the living room and it is. In addition to that, it said that it had to

be made out of MDF board and it is. (2)

5. Weight: It is definitely lighter than 1kg. A pin can hold it up and it is not made out of

metal or iron like the specification had stated. (2)

6. Time: This clock took a lot more than 5 hours to make but that’s how it should have

been. There is something wrong with this specification so it doesn’t really fit it. We had

20 periods and therefore, the clock needs to take more than 5 hours. It was made in the

time period which was provided and it took more than 2 hours to make so it fits part of

the specification. (2)

7. Cost: The clock probably costs about 30-50 dollars to make like this specification

says, taking into regard the MDF board, the materials, the tools, the balsa wood, the

numbers, the mechanism, etc. It is probably not too expensive and the client really likes

it so it fits this specification. (1)

8. Functions: This clock has a clock mechanism and therefore it is able to tell the time. The

aesthetic qualities do not block the time telling and it is easy to read the time. Therefore,

it fits this specification. (2)

9. Target Market: The target market is the client and the clock was done according to the

client interview. I asked questions and made the clock according to the answers of the

client just like this specification requires. I followed the instructions of the client. The

clock is appealing to not only the client, but almost everybody including children and

adults. (2)

10. Product Lifespan: It seems as though the clock will last several years since it is made

of MDF board at the base. Though I am not so sure about 5 years. It doesn’t seem as

though it will break down or disintegrate really easily but in the future it might. It is

pretty durable but due to the mosaic pieces I am not sure if it will survive falling off the

wall. This almost fits this specification. (1)

11. Health and Safety: It is not really dangerous. It is not made of glass like this specification

requires. It doesn’t have really sharp pieces, or dangerous materials poping out. It is safe

for children to touch and for people to look at. It would not easily break though some of

the mosaic tiles may come off. It does not have any needles sticking out anywhere. The

handles are long, and pretty thick so they don’t hurt anybody. It fits this specification. (2)

12. Manufacturing: It was made in school with the material provided. It was easy to make

and it was made with the material given in the DT Room as well as the tools there.

Therefore, it fits this specification. (2)

13. It should be original: It is not something that was created a lot before. The design is not

something that was really found on the internet. It is pretty original, hence it meets this

specification. (2)

14. Thickness: It is no thicker than 5cm, including the mechanism. It is able to hold itself up

on the wall, therefore it meets this specification. (2)

15. It should be easy to read: The numbers are easy to read from different places. It is

pleasing to look at and not too tiring to the eyes, just like the specification asks. (2)

16. It should have numbers: It has numbers on it, and it correctly tells the time. Therefore, it

meets this specification. (2)

17. Must have hands: It has hands that tell the time. The hour hand is shorter than the

minute hand. They go clockwise. And the hands are not too long nor too short. The

handles are a different color than the background of the clock. It fits this specification.

(2)

18. It must have a pendulum: It has pendulum that has toy on it. It moves and is long yet

not too long. It is less than 30cm long. The pendulum looks good, as this specification

requires. (2)
